Becoming a Māori Warden

How do you become a Māori Warden?

The first step is simple. Contact your region to find out what it’s all about.  They will help you through the process.

Send them an email with your:

  • name
  • phone number
  • town you live in

To find your region, follow the links below.

If you want to understand the full process, you can read more here.  The Minister for Māori Development can appoint Māori Wardens and grant a warrant.  The District Māori Council is responsible for nominating Māori Wardens and your region will submit the applications to the Ministry of Māori Development | Te Puni Kōkiri. Once a Māori Warden is appointed, the Ministry of Māori Development can make reappointments.
